As part of the Solarpunk VS Grimdark Mock Jam, challenged to design game ideas around the two themes that address eco-crisis.

The prompts I had were,

  • Solarpunk
  • Focus on Climate displacement
    • People losing their homes or moved to another country as refugees due to a climate disaster
  • Awumbuk
    • "There is an emptiness after visitors depart. The walls echo. THe space which felt so cramped while they were here now seems weirdly large. And though there is often relief, we can also be left with a muffled feeling - as if a fog has decended and everything seems rather pointless. From The Box of Emotions by Dr Tiffany Watt-Smith (2020) "

I present a mock up in Miro of my game "Natureality". A strategy/city builder that is reminiscent of Frostpunk and Anno games. The player is challenges with combating displacement after a disaster has struck e.g. flooding. Players have to balance resource allocation and create preventative homes for those displaced. However, players need to balance refugees hope, sense of community, safety and quality of life. Players can build a variety of structures, from the realistic, to futuristic and outlandish. Once players have re-house refugees, the Solarpunk side of the game unfolds where players build a new utopia combating climate crisis.

A prototype can be played in the Miro below by clicking through or scrolling through the storyboard.
